Reel #1 side A most likely was recorded @7.5 ips and all the rest was @15 ips. Â Dan Healy once explained he was running two different decks at this time, an 8-track 15 ips. and an Ampex 7.5 ips. deck.

of the year included the Human Be-In and the Monterey Pop Festival, and Sgt. Pepper’s, Surrealistic Pillow, and Are You Experienced had just hit the shelves. These two takes may sound raw, but they really aren’t too far off from the finished products. The Dark Star that they would end up releasing sounds so supernatural and spooky that it’s almost tough to believe it was made by actual people, but sure enough, this recording lets you hear the musicians sewing it together with a smooth, silky bassline, soft, shady guitar licks, and quick shocks of acoustic chords. It’s a few men in a room, crafting a jam vehicle that would soon go on to break walls of consciousness for countless listeners. Here I am, over 55 years later, hoping that I get to see Bobby and Mickey play it this weekend at Saratoga Springs. Was there more to this session than these two takes? Probably. But let’s appreciate what we have. This is a quick fly-on-the-wall glimpse of the Grateful Dead’s early days. Not to get too emotional, but we really are so blessed that a few of these gentlemen are still out there playing the music today. Many worlds have come since this Fall ‘67 studio session… the bus is still rolling along, and there’s still more music waiting to be played.

I like it
I like the energy and the raw feeling yet pretty darn clean. Fond memories of years gone by.
